    Investigation of imaging and flight guidance concepts for rotorcraft zero visibility approach and landing

    A simulation experiment to explore the use of an augmented pictorial display to approach and land a helicopter in zero visibility conditions was conducted in a fixed base simulator. A literature search was also conducted to determine related work. A display was developed and pilot in-the-loop evaluations were conducted. The pictorial display was a simulated, high resolution radar image, augmented with various parameters to improve distance and motion cues. Approaches and landings were accomplished, but with higher workloads and less accuracy than necessary for a practical system. Recommendations are provided for display improvements and a follow on simulation study in a moving based simulator

    Non-Markovian effects on non-locality of a qubit-oscillator system

    Non-Markovian evolutions are responsible for a wide variety of physically interesting effects. Here, we study non-locality of the non-classical state of a system consisting of a qubit and an oscillator exposed to the effects of non-Markovian evolutions. We find that the different facets of non-Markovianity affect non-locality in different and non-obvious ways: ranging from pronounced insensitivity of the Bell function to quite a spectacular evidence of information kick-back.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, RevTeX

    Observation of Parity Nonconservation in Møller Scattering

    We report a measurement of the parity-violating asymmetry in fixed target electron-electron (Møller) scattering: A_(PV) = [-175 ± 30(stat)± 20(syst)] X 10^(-9). This first direct observation of parity nonconservation in Møller scattering leads to a measurement of the electron’s weak charge at low energy Q^e_W = -0:053 ± 0:011. This is consistent with the standard model expectation at the current level of precision: sin^2θ_W = (M_Z)_(MS) = 0:2293 ± 0:0024(stat) ± 0:0016(syst) ± 0:0006(theory)

    Novel Technique for Ultra-sensitive Determination of Trace Elements in Organic Scintillators

    A technique based on neutron activation has been developed for an extremely high sensitivity analysis of trace elements in organic materials. Organic materials are sealed in plastic or high purity quartz and irradiated at the HFIR and MITR. The most volatile materials such as liquid scintillator (LS) are first preconcentrated by clean vacuum evaporation. Activities of interest are separated from side activities by acid digestion and ion exchange. The technique has been applied to study the liquid scintillator used in the KamLAND neutrino experiment. Detection limits of <2.4X10**-15 g 40K/g LS, <5.5X10**-15 g Th/g LS, and <8X10**-15 g U/g LS have been achieved.Comment: 16 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in Nuclear Instruments and Methods

    Usability evaluation of an experimental text summarization system and three search engines: Implications for the reengineering of health care interfaces

    This paper describes the comparative evaluation of an experimental automated text summarization system, Centrifuser and three conventional search engines - Google, Yahoo and About.com. Centrifuser provides information to patients and families relevant to their questions about specific health conditions. It then produces a multidocument summary of articles retrieved by a standard search engine, tailored to the user's question. Subjects, consisting of friends or family of hospitalized patients, were asked to "think aloud" as they interacted with the four systems. The evaluation involved audio- and video recording of subject interactions with the interfaces in situ at a hospital. Results of the evaluation show that subjects found Centrifuser's summarization capability useful and easy to understand. In comparing Centrifuser to the three search engines, subjects' ratings varied; however, specific interface features were deemed useful across interfaces. We conclude with a discussion of the implications for engineering Web-based retrieval systems

    Search for a Short-Lived Neutral Particle Produced in Nuclear Decay

    We report on a search for a short-lived neutral particle φ produced in the decay of the 9.17-MeV Jπ=2+ state in 14N. The experiment is sensitive to decays into an e+e- pair with τφ≲10^-11 s. For mφ=1.7 MeV we place a limit on the branching ratio of Γφ/Γγ<~4×10^-4 at the 90% confidence level

    Assessing Survival and Grading the Severity of Complications in Octogenarians Undergoing Pulmonary Lobectomy.

    Introduction. Octogenarians are at increased risk for complications after lung resection. With alternatives such as radiation, understanding the risks of surgery and associated survival are valuable. Data grading the severity of complications and long-term survival in this population is lacking. We reviewed our experience with lobectomy in octogenarians, grading complications using a validated thoracic morbidity and mortality schema. Methods. We retrospectively reviewed consecutive patients aged ≥80 undergoing lobectomy between 2004 and 2012. Demographics, clinical/pathologic stage, complications, recurrence, and mortality were collected. Complications were graded by the Seely thoracic morbidity and mortality model. Results. 45 patients (mean age 82.2 years) were analyzed. The majority of patients (28/45, 62%) were clinical stage IA/IB. 62% (28/45) of patients experienced a complication. Only 15.6% (7/45) were considered significantly morbid (≥ grade IIIB) per the Seely model. Perioperative mortality was 2% and half of patients were living at a follow-up of 53 months. Overall five-year survival was 52%. Conclusions. In carefully selected octogenarians, lobectomy carries a 15.6% rate of significantly morbid complications with encouraging overall survival. These data provide the basis for a more complete discussion with patients regarding lobectomy for lung cancer

    Measurement of the Proton's Neutral Weak Magnetic Form Factor

    We report the first measurement of the parity-violating asymmetry in elastic electron scattering from the proton. The asymmetry depends on the neutral weak magnetic form factor of the proton which contains new information on the contribution of strange quark-antiquark pairs to the magnetic moment of the proton. We obtain the value GMZ=0.34±0.09±0.04±0.05G_M^Z= 0.34 \pm 0.09 \pm 0.04 \pm 0.05 n.m. at Q2=0.1Q^2=0.1 (GeV/c)2{}^2.Comment: 4 pages TEX, text available at http://www.krl.caltech.edu/preprints/OAP.htm
